Wolfensberger Road is one of Castle Rock’s most important east–west corridors, linking neighborhoods on the west side of town with Interstate 25 and the downtown area. As the community continues to grow, this stretch of roadway has experienced increasing traffic congestion and a need for an improved design.
To address these challenges, the Town has developed the Wolfensberger Road Widening Project to expand traffic capacity, incorporate modern safety features, and create new connections for pedestrians and cyclists. At Casares Injury Law, our Castle Rock car accident lawyers understand how projects like this can play a crucial role in improving safety and reducing accident risks.
The Scope of the Project
The project focuses on widening Wolfensberger Road from Prairie Hawk Drive to the western town limits. Currently, only two lanes exist along much of this stretch.
The widening will expand the road to four lanes to minimize traffic bottlenecks and prepare the corridor for long-term growth. In addition, the eastbound stretch of Wolfensberger near Cedar Hill Cemetery will also be expanded. Additional lanes will allow for smoother traffic movement, particularly during peak hours.
The project also features improvements to the corridor’s multi-modal access, including:
- Pedestrian sidewalks to provide safe walkways between neighborhoods and Town destinations.
- Multi-use bicycle lanes that will link the downtown area with Coachline Road.
- A new roundabout at Wolfensberger Road and Red Hawk Drive is being constructed to improve intersection safety and reduce the risk of car accidents.
Together, these improvements are designed to enhance the efficiency of local and regional travel. The corridor will now become a more complete transportation route, serving drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians alike. The project also supports new and planned development along Wolfensberger Road and strengthens ties to the downtown business district.
Project Timeline and Status
The Wolfensberger Road Widening Project is approximately 30% complete. However, progress is currently paused.
The Town expects work to resume in 2029, which will provide time to acquire the necessary right-of-way and secure full funding for construction. Castle Rock is currently prioritizing land acquisition around Wolfensberger Road to ensure a smooth transition once the project resumes.
What Departments Are Involved in the Project?
The Wolfensberger Road Widening Project impacts a wide variety of residents, businesses, and property owners. Project engineers and planners are actively gathering feedback to ensure that the community’s concerns are incorporated into final designs.
The Town will hold an agency workshop to gather input from key groups such as:
- Castle Rock Parks and Trails Foundation
- Douglas County Historic Preservation Board
- Castle Rock Fire and Rescue
- Castle Rock Police Department
- Other relevant Town departments
Stakeholder groups will also be organized around specific interests. For example, retail and commercial voices will be represented through the Castle Rock Chamber of Commerce, while homebuilders like KB Homes, BLVD Builders, and Richmond Homes will have opportunities to share input. Non-residential property owners, including Epiphany Lutheran Church, the Douglas County School District, and the Cedar Hill Cemetery Board of Directors, will also be part of the process. Property owners with direct driveway access to Wolfensberger will be engaged individually to address their unique needs.
Moving Forward
The Wolfensberger Road Widening Project is one of many improvements the Town is making to its transportation network. While construction is still a few years away, the groundwork being laid today will pay dividends for local and regional travel and prepare the area for new development. It will also make this area more accessible to pedestrians and bicyclists, creating a friendlier road environment for decades to come.
