Crowfoot Valley Road Widening Project

As Castle Rock continues to grow, traffic congestion and safety concerns grow along with it. To address one such concern, the Town has developed the Crowfoot Valley Road Widening Project to expand the section of road between Knobcone Drive and Macanta Boulevard. The project is intended to prepare the road for future growth and Casares Injury Law’s Castle Rock car accident attorneys recognize how vital these safety improvements are for local families.

Overview of the Project

The section of Crowfoot Valley Road between Knobcone Drive and Macanta Boulevard is currently a two-lane asphalt road, partially in the Town of Castle Rock and partially in Douglas County.

Over the years, the Town and County have made improvements at both ends of this stretch. However, the middle gap has remained underdeveloped and created congestion and safety concerns.

This project addresses that gap and is meant to achieve multiple community goals:

  • Improving capacity to handle current traffic volumes and forecasted growth.
  • Enhance safety for motorists, bicyclists, and pedestrians and reduce the risk of motor vehicle accidents.
  • Reduce delays for drivers entering intersections and for through traffic.
  • Support connectivity among neighborhoods such as Sapphire Pointe, Diamond Ridge, Timber Canyon, and Macanta.

Construction officially began in May 2025 and is expected to be finished by the end of summer 2026 (weather permitting). The Town and Douglas County are collaborating on the project.

Key Improvements to Crowfoot Valley Road

The goal of the project is to create a safer, more efficient corridor with better multimodal access.

The project will:

  • Expand Crowfoot Valley Road to four lanes (two in each direction).
  • Create dedicated left-turn and right-turn lanes at signalized intersections where needed.
  • Develop on-street bicycle lanes to improve safety and connectivity for cyclists.
  • Establish sidewalks along the project’s length to support pedestrian access.
  • Install a new traffic signal at Sapphire Pointe Boulevard.

The project will also establish wider, taller medians and narrower lane widths (11 ft instead of the typical 12 ft) to help slow vehicle speeds.

Funding and Costs for the Project

The estimated construction cost of the project is about $8.4 million, with Douglas County contributing roughly $1.7 million toward the project. These funds cover construction, plus related design costs. Funding sources also include local revenues like sales tax, motor vehicle taxes, development impact fees, and contributions from adjacent developments.

Timeline of the Crowfood Valley Road Widening Project

The design and planning phases for the Crowfoot Valley Road Widening Project have largely been completed. The project moved into construction in May 2025.

The project is expected to be completed by Summer 2026, barring significant weather or supply interruptions.

During construction, the Town will provide updates via email lists and public notices so that residents and businesses can receive notice about major developments. You can join the email list by signing up here

Town staff have provided FAQs on topics like bike safety, speed limits, and how impacts on neighborhoods will be managed. The FAQ addresses nearly a dozen questions that the Town has received from the community through surveys, feedback, and other outreach.

The Project Going Forward

The Crowfoot Valley Road Widening Project is part of Castle Rock’s Transportation Master Plan and is meant to align infrastructure with the Town’s growth and safety priorities. By updating underdeveloped sections of the road, the corridor will become a more reliable, safer route for drivers. It will also become safer and more convenient for cyclists and pedestrians, and better positioned to serve planned development in adjacent areas.
